CHC/SEK provides bone densitometry (DEXA or DXA) scanning to help assess bone health and identify risk for osteoporosis and fractures. A bone density scan is a low-dose X-ray that measures calcium and other minerals in your bones.
Bones with higher mineral content are denser, stronger, and less likely to break. This test helps evaluate your bone strength and thickness, also known as bone density or bone mass, to support early detection and ongoing care.
Why get a bone density scan?
Most women age 65 or older should have a bone density scan because this age group is at a high risk of losing bone density, which can lead to fractures. Women of other ages and men may also be at risk for losing bone density if they:
- Have a very low body weight
- Have had one or more fractures after the age of 50
- Have lost an inch or more in height within one year
- Have a family history of osteoporosis
The test usually takes 10 to 30 minutes. Your provider will usually get the results in a few days.
DEXA scans are available at our Fort Scott location.
