CHC/SEK Diaper Program Assists 845 Southeast Kansas Families

In 2025, 845 local families received assistance through the Southeast Kansas (SEK) Diaper Stock program operated by the Community Health Center of Southeast Kansas (CHC/SEK).

The Southeast Kansas Diaper Stock launched in 2017 as a collaboration between community organizations, including CHC/SEK. The program was designed to help ensure local families have access to clean diapers, an essential need for infants and toddlers. In 2020, CHC/SEK absorbed the program under its umbrella.

Across the United States, many families struggle to afford diapers for their young children. According to the National Diaper Bank Network, 40% of U.S. households with children under age 4 in diapers reported diaper insecurity in 2025.

Last year, CHC/SEK received $2,500 to purchase diapers for the program from the General Funds Basic Human Needs Grant administered by the Community Foundation of Southeast Kansas.

“We are extremely thankful for the continued support of the Community Foundation of Southeast Kansas,” said Julie Laverack, CHC/SEK Patient Education and Support Manager. “The incredible support we receive from our community, from diaper drives to participation in Art Walk, continues to make SEK Diaper Stock a successful program for area families.”

CHC/SEK partnered with a variety of community organizations to distribute diapers, including Parents as Teachers, Birth to Three, Pittsburg Family Advocates, Healthy Families, and Head Start. Through the program, families receive a week’s worth of diapers each month from their home visitor as long as they remain engaged in services through one of the partner organizations.

The Community Foundation of Southeast Kansas administers individual charitable funds created by donors committed to giving back to their communities. Grants from these funds support people throughout Southeast Kansas and beyond. Visit SoutheastKansas.org or call 620-231-8897 for more information.
