Recognizing Lung Cancer Awareness Month

At CHC/SEK, we’re committed to helping our community stay healthy, one screening at a time. November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month, a time to highlight the importance of early detection through low-dose Computed Tomography (CT) screenings.

CHC/SEK provides high quality imaging using advanced 64-slice CT scanners designed for patient comfort, featuring a wide table and large frame opening. CT services are available at our Pittsburg North and Fort Scott locations.

Our team of five highly skilled CT technologists brings more than 75 years of combined experience to their work, delivering exceptional expertise and compassionate care. Patients can trust that they’ll receive the highest quality imaging and feel supported every step of the way.

CHC/SEK’s CT services are accredited by the American College of Radiology reflecting our commitment to safety, quality, and excellence in patient care. This year, our staff have conducted 489 low-dose lung cancer screenings. Of those, 75 required follow-up exams and 39 had suspicious findings, meaning further testing or biopsies were needed. These numbers highlight just how important screening can be in identifying lung cancer early.

To qualify for a CT screening, patients must meet the following criteria:

  • Be between the ages of 50 and 80
  • Be a current or former smoker (within 15 years)
  • Have a 20 pack-year smoking history (the equivalent of smoking one pack a day for 20 years)

Screenings are quick, painless, and non-invasive — taking less than 10 minutes from start to finish. No contrast is needed, and patients simply hold their breath a few times during the scan. Results are typically available within 24 hours, with CHC staff following up promptly.

For CT screenings, you need to have a scheduled appointment. Patients can self-refer or have a physician’s order for lung cancer screenings. While prior authorization is required for those with insurance, our employees can help with that process. Those without insurance may qualify for CHC/SEK’s sliding scale discount, with screenings starting as low as $50.

If you have questions, need to schedule your lung cancer screening, or want to learn more about eligibility, call 620-223-8484.
