October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to come together to support those fighting breast cancer, to honor the survivors and to remember those we have lost. It’s a reminder that early detection saves lives — and that every screening matters. The Community Health Center of Southeast Kansas (CHC/SEK) performed 3,408 mammograms last year — each one an important step toward saving lives through early detection.
Many people think breast cancer only runs in families, but that’s not true. More than 80 percent of women who get breast cancer have no family history. Only 5 to 10 percent of cases are linked to inherited genes. About one in eight women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime, and 1 in 726 men will as well. This is why regular mammograms and self-checks are important for everyone. “Detecting breast cancer early leads to more effective treatments and better survival rates,” says Kimberly Wass, CHC/SEK Radiology Lead. “We recommend women between the ages of 40 and 74 to get a mammogram screening annually.”
CHC/SEK also emphasizes the importance of breast cancer awareness by providing educational opportunities. This fall, Inspire Health Foundation, a subsidiary of CHC/SEK, welcomed local high school students for the 2025 Inspiring Women Conference. Guest speaker Mitzi Starkweather shared about her own experience with breast cancer and emphasized the importance of advocating for oneself. “Breast self-exams are so important, and you should always speak up when something doesn’t feel right.” Mitzi’s message reminds us how early detection can save lives. If you notice changes, talk to your healthcare provider. CHC/SEK can help with mammograms, ultrasounds, or finding a provider if you need one.
CHC/SEK offers walk-in screening mammograms year-round — no appointment or physician order required. Screenings are available Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, in Fort Scott (2322 S. Main St.) and Pittsburg (1011 S. Mount Carmel Place). Call 620-223-8484 to schedule an appointment; no physician order is required for screening mammograms.
CHC/SEK’s mammography team has 97 years of combined experience and makes every effort to ensure patients feel comfortable and supported. Mammograms are quick—usually taking five minutes or less—and non-invasive. “The benefits of a mammogram outweigh the risk of radiation, which is very minimal,” said Jennifer Dugan, CHC/SEK Mammography Lead. Within 24 hours, mammogram results are ready and shared through the patient portal, helping patients get answers fast.
CHC/SEK is accredited by the American College of Radiology (ACR) and certified by the FDA, ensuring the highest standards of quality and safety. The mammography team uses advanced Genius® 3D Mammography™ technology, providing detailed imaging for more accurate results.
At CHC/SEK, financial barriers never stand in the way of care. Mammogram screenings are available to everyone, regardless of income or insurance status. Whether it’s your first mammogram or an annual check-in, CHC/SEK is here to help you take that vital step toward early detection — because your health matters, and early detection saves lives.
