Behind the Scenes: Benefits Enrollment Department

At CHC/SEK, we’re here to help patients every step of the way—including getting the insurance they need. That’s where the Benefits Enrollment team comes in, helping people understand their options and get covered with confidence.

The Benefits Enrollment team is made up of six specialists who work with patients of all ages to guide them through the insurance process. Whether it’s Medicaid, Marketplace plans, or Medicare Part D, they help patients understand their options and apply for coverage that fits their needs.

Some members of the team are State Health Insurance Assistance Program trained, meaning they can assist with Medicare Part D, helping patients compare medication coverage and find a plan that works for them. Others help with getting important documents like birth certificates or driver’s licenses. While each team member brings unique strengths, they work closely together and share the goal of making the process less overwhelming and more accessible for every patient they serve.

They support a wide range of patients—from young families with children to older adults approaching retirement. For children, the Benefits Enrollment department helps with Medicaid and Presumptive Eligibility (PE), if needed. PE allows CHC staff to immediately qualify individuals same day for Medicaid coverage so long as they meet certain criteria that make them eligible for Medicaid.

Benefits Enrollment staff also walk patients through Marketplace options, explaining what they do and do not qualify for and what to expect along the way. And they’re there for those navigating Medicare, helping them understand what’s covered and what related programs they might be eligible for.

In the last 12 months, the Benefits Enrollment team has helped nearly 3,000 people obtain coverage.

One team member recently worked with a 65-year-old small business owner who didn’t know where to start with Medicare. Together, they enrolled him in Medicare Parts A and B, helped him apply for Medicaid, and set up a Social Security portal so he could begin planning for retirement. The patient asked if he could come back when he was ready to apply for SSI, and the team member told him, “Absolutely! I’ll be here to help!”

What makes this team so important is the peace of mind it brings to patients. For many people, having insurance means they finally feel like they can take care of their health. It removes a huge barrier and gives them confidence to seek the care they need. The team understands that. They know insurance can be complicated and that there’s rarely just one clear answer. Their job isn’t to tell people what to do—it’s to give them the tools and information to make the decision that’s right for them.

You’ll find the Benefits Enrollment team spread across CHC clinics, meeting patients where they are and answering staff questions as well.  They are known for their patience, compassion, and willingness to go the extra mile. Even when resources are limited, or the process is tough, they’re there doing their best, answering questions, and offering support every step of the way.
